Mobile broadband is used to describe a variety of different types of wireless high speed internet using portable modem, telephone, or other types of devices. One could say that mobile broadband has been around for over ten years, though it did not come into popularity until the last 15 years depending on area and country.
PC cards were the first creation for mobile broadband to extend coverage in more than one room of the house. With the right PC card users could have a mobile connection via a router, allowing one room to have the internet modem and the person to be in another. Many mobile devices are now the transceiver, meaning they can obtain a signal as long as they are near enough to a modem with a router and wireless antenna. Originally only pay monthly packages were available but now there are many payg mobile broadband providers. This brings us to the mobile broadband coverage discussion. In order to understand the coverage one must understand what mobile broadband is and how it has changed.

The first generation was simple in that you had to be very close to your router in order to get a signal. Second generation technology offered a wider area. As long as the router or antenna in use had an amplifier there was a good chance of a strong connection. You had to be in a hot spot though in order to get the strongest and most continuous signal. 3G or third generation has changed this and opened up a bigger world. The second generation lacked the ability of speech and data services to be used simultaneously, which made for a slower connection. In 2007 3G was announced and added to most mobile phones. Dongles and other PC mobile devices were created with 3G. It has allowed individuals to be on the internet, receive data, and even talk on the phone with a mobile phone or computer with appropriate software.
The latest in new mobile broadband cover is 4G or fourth generation. 4G is the ultra mobile broadband. Technically it has been on the market since 2010, though some were branding 3G Long term Evolution as 4G. 3G LTE came out in 2009, but without the completeness that the DARPA 4G offers. 4G is a transceiver and router all in one packaging.
This makes internet possible more like your mobile phone. A mobile phone talk signal used towers and now uses satellites to keep a conversation from dropping. The 4G coverage technology was able to adapt the near global use of mobile phone to the mobile broadband. Now you cannot only have a conversation in nearly every place on the globe, but you can also access the internet. The signal will be stronger by hot spots, but you have a better countryside connection. For instance, with 4G you can be in the woods miles from a town and still receive internet signals.
